UNTAINTED SKY is a film about breaking free from forces that have been imposed upon you against your will. My goal is to embody this idea through the metaphor of the Machine being suffocating lifestyles and the surface being personal freedom found in moving beyond those spheres.
There is nothing more oppressive and claustrophobic than feeling trapped within certain mindsets, beliefs, or standards that you haven’t chosen for yourself. The aim of UNTAINTED SKY is to capture that sensation within the confines of the Machine through narrow corridors representing the narrow-mindedness of certain lifestyles and idealism. The wide open space of the surface will simulate an experience of liberation to the audience through Kalis and his experience with the relief he finds on the surface.
Most who live in oppression have commanding voices dictating what they can and cannot do; what is and isn’t allowed. This will be represented through the sound design of the Machine and the robot within it with grating sounds such as an MRI and droning. This will then be contrasted by freedom from such commanding tones when we enter the surface where gentle breezes and subtle resonate instrumental tones.
The overall message I wish to convey is that there is hope for those who feel subjugated to an entity they don’t fit in. Life is all about self-exploration and a lot of the time, that means coming to the realization that the world you grew up in isn’t the world you want to continue living in. Breaking free from the life loved ones have come to accept us within is one of the most difficult things we have to do in our journey of self-discovery. However, self acceptance and pursuance can bring liberation and relief that outweighs those difficulties in breaking away from our past. This film is an embodiment of the worth of deliverance in the face of potential sacrifice.
Maturing into adulthood brings self-revelation that moves us to create our own sense of identity which often comes with an abandonment of past ways of life that can cause rifts in relationships. I believe every human who has matured into adulthood can relate to this and therefore plan to appeal to those experiences that my actors have had. On the flip side, I plan to use the innocence of my child actor to embody the liberation that comes from embracing a new and more fitting lifestyle more true to one’s self.
